Born and raised in Weardale, County Durham, I earned degrees in Classics and Comparative Political Theory from St. John's, Durham, disciplines that I continue to be passionate about to this day.
Upon graduating, I moved to London, where I worked in several diverse industries, including law with Allen & Overy, entertainment with Sony Music Europe, insurance with BUPA, and telecoms with O2 and Cable & Wireless Global. Facing redundancy in 2008, I embraced the opportunity to embark on an international contract career spanning Europe, ASPAC, North & Central Africa, Iraq/Afghanistan, and The Caribbean (inc. Haiti).
With 25 years of executive experience, I've led teams of 20+ individuals across various organizational structures, encompassing direct, matrix, and multi-country operations. I've held direct P&L responsibility exceeding US$100M, demonstrating my aptitude for strategic decision-making and financial acumen.
My leadership extends to leading Supplier/Partner, Product, and Sales teams, serving multi-channel Global/National Enterprise Customers. I have a proven track record of consistently surpassing revenue and customer satisfaction targets. My expertise in major project and program management has been pivotal in orchestrating successful implementations across diverse operations and teams in challenging environments.
As an open communicator, facilitator, and negotiator, I've fostered fruitful relationships with international stakeholders, including C-Level executives, government bodies, state-owned enterprises, NGOs, regional development organizations, regulators, and carriers/suppliers/partners.
An ideas and values contributor in the Boardroom, I love rolling my sleeves up and implementing change at the operational front-end; creating a bridge between Executives and teams allowing frank and unbiased discussions to optimise progress and minimise friction.
My work experience spans the UK, EU, Europe, North America, the Caribbean (including Haiti), West and East Africa, Southeast Asia, Australasia, and the Pacific Islands. In each locale, I've managed country/regional/international P&L, teams, and sales channels with a focus on driving sustainable growth and fostering collaborative, profitable environments.

During my role as CEO of Egg, Nigel supported the business managing one of our key suppliers through a tricky contract negotiation process. Nigel is one of the most savvy, articulate and "hands on" executives that I have the opportunity to work with. I have seen him perform an absolute miracle during the acquisition of Batelco in the Bahamas, where he led the transformation strategy from a government owned entity to a private business with top financial metrics. NBSL Grants are aimed at business growth, the business must be a Small to Medium Enterprise (SME), including Social Enterprises.
An SME is defined as an organisation employing fewer than 250 people with either an annual turnover of less than €50 Million (circa £42m as of April 2024) or a Balance Sheet Value of less than €43 Million (circa £36m as of April 2024).
As part of an application, NBSL will need to know the number of people you employ and some financial information to confirm you are an SME.
If the business applying is involved in any kind of group structure – either being partially of fully owned by another businesses or having partial or full ownership of another business – further details will be required post-application to establish eligibility.
Durham County Council catchment area supporting projects costing between £2.5K-£8K (excl. VAT) for a maximum grant of £3.2K.
Sunderland City Council catchment area supporting projects costing between £3K-£6K (excl. VAT) upto 40% of eligible business spend is covered.
North East Combined Authority (Northumberland, North Tyneside, Newcastle) catchment area supporting projects costing £3K-£8K (excl.VAT) upto 50% of eligible business spend is covered.
